Introduction. Currently, the study of molecular and cellular bases for the development of frailty is an actual scientific problem. The aim of the article is to study the morphofunctional and cytochemical characteristics of erythrocytes in frailty patients. Methods. The study of morphofunctional and chemical characteristics of erythrocytes in 253 patients of different ages by scanning probe microscopy and elemental analysis. Results. The metabolic syndrome may be a predictor of frailty. In frailty patients with metabolic syndrome we observed changes of morphofunctional properties of erythrocytes, the main of which are as follows: the increase in the number of erythrocytes of irregular shapes and destructed cells, the cells with effect of «deflated ball» and the effect of sludge. In elderly patients there was found a large degree of morphological and functional changes and molecular characteristics of erythrocytes in pathology studied in quantitative terms. Conclusion. The erythrocytes are the target cells in the processes associated with the development of frailty.
